The Right to Information Act of 2005 (RTI Act) empowers citizens of India to request information from public authorities. The act was introduced on October 12, 2005. It replaced the Freedom of Information Act of 2002.

The RTI Act allows citizens to:

  • Request information from public authorities
  • Inspect government documents
  • Seek certified photocopies of government documents
  • Promote transparency and accountability in the working of public authorities
  • Pay a fee depending on the nature of the information sought

The RTI Act applies to the whole of India, except the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Public Information Officers and Assistant Public Information Officers are responsible for dealing with requests for information. They are also responsible for assisting people seeking information.

The RTI Act has been widely used by citizens and the media to:

  • Uncover corruption
  • Track progress in government work
  • Obtain expenses-related information
